Environment Texas
Environment Texas
Environment Texas is is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization. (You may see references to its former name, the Texas Public Interest Research Group, or TexPIRG.)
The major issues that Environment Texas and GHASP collaborate on are environmental enforcement and mercury issues.
- We both believe that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the US EPA have a terrible track record when it comes to taking enforcement against chemical plants and refineries on the Texas Gulf Coast.
- We have worked together to educate the public on the hazards of mercury contamination in seafood, due primarily to emissions from coal-fired power plants. We also support the legislative efforts of Environment Texas to reduce mercury emissions statewide and nationally.
We are also very pleased to participate in the Texas Environmental Leadership Program (TELP). Through the TELP, we've had the assistance of a number of excellent interns and given them a promising start to their careers.
Report Highlights Need for Control of Air Toxics
A joint press release of GHASP and Mothers for Clean Air
The Houston-Galveston area leads the nation in industrial emissions of air toxics, according to a new report by Environment Texas, Toxic Pollution and Health. These chemicals can cause a variety of health effects, from cancer to diseases of the reproductive, respiratory and neurological systems. The data underscore the need for improved control of air toxics in Houston-area communities.
