Mercury
Mercury - a different kind of air pollutant
Many fish commonly caught or consumed in the Houston area are contaminated by mercury from air pollution.
Mercury is a neurotoxin and, according to the Texas Medical Association, “threatens human health and child
development.” In adults, mercury can permanently damage the brain and cardiovascular system and reduce fertility. Affected infants and young children may experience irreversible damage to their intelligence, learning capabilities, vision, and hearing.
Mercury exposure can affect anyone
According to an essay in NRDC's This Green Life, many more people may be injured by mercury pollution exposure than is widely assumed.
Houston, Dallas mayors to fight coal plants
The decision by mayors of Houston, Dallas and several other cities to intervene in the permit fight regarding several coal-fired power plants for Texas is welcome news. When local governments got involved in state water quality fights, it finally became more clear to the TCEQ that environmental organizations were not just complaining, but that our colleagues were representing a pressing public concern. Perhaps a well-funded effort by cities to intervene on air pollution issues will have wider implications.
The Dallas Business Journal reported on this issue.
